Understanding Thurrock
Thames-side housing on clay soil
Properties across Thurrock — from Tilbury and Grays to Stanford-le-Hope and South Ockendon — sit predominantly on London Clay near the Thames estuary. This affects foundation design, drainage and how subsidence and heave should be assessed.
Mixed housing stock across the borough
Thurrock combines Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Grays, post-war and 1960s housing in Tilbury and South Ockendon, and substantial new-build developments around Purfleet. Each era has its own structural quirks worth understanding before alterations.
Active regeneration driving home improvements
Ongoing regeneration around Tilbury, Grays and Purfleet is increasing property values across Thurrock. Homeowners are investing in extensions, loft conversions, wall removals and structural surveys to bring older properties up to modern standards.
1950s-1970s residential housing stock near the Thames
Tilbury's housing is predominantly post-war terraced and semi-detached properties. Many homes are on clay soil near the Thames estuary, making foundation assessment important. Loft conversions and rear extensions are popular improvements.

Chimney Breast Removal with Gallows Brackets - Thurrock
📍 thurrock · RM16
The Challenge
Homeowner wanted to remove the ground-floor chimney breast in a 1930s semi while keeping the upstairs breast and stack intact, to free up space in the lounge.
Our Solution
Designed a pair of galvanised gallows brackets bolted to the party wall to support the remaining breast above. Specified bolt sizes, fixings and load paths in line with Approved Document A. Provided clear drawings the builder could install from.
The Result
Building Control approved the calculations on first submission. Brackets installed without issue and the lounge gained valuable floor space without affecting the chimney above.
